AG100 with Digital Effects

The AG100D is one of the most important new amplifier updates in the 1998 catalog. It builds on the earlier AG100 multi-purpose acoustic/bass/PA format but adds onboard digital multi-effects, making it more complete as a self-contained performance amp. Carvin presents it as a three-channel unit for acoustic/electric guitar, microphone, instrument, tape, bass, and small PA use. Its 100-watt power amp drives a 12-inch speaker and horn tweeter in a tuned bass-reflex enclosure, giving it more range than a simple acoustic combo. The addition of phantom mic power, a five-band master graphic EQ, effects loop, line out, headphone jack, and stand insert makes it useful for solo performers, small venues, worship settings, rehearsal rooms, and compact sound reinforcement setups.

  • New digital-effects version of the AG100 concept
  • 100-watt internal power amp
  • Heavy-duty 12-inch speaker plus horn tweeter
  • Rear L-pad for high-frequency control
  • Three independent channels
  • Channel 1 voiced for acoustic/electric guitar
  • Channel 2 for instrument, tape, or bass use
  • Channel 3 with XLR and 1/4-inch inputs for mic/instrument use
  • Phantom mic power included
  • 16 digital effects
  • Master effects level
  • Five-band master graphic EQ
  • Effects loop with send/receive jacks
  • Line out, headphone jack, and external speaker jack
  • Built-in stand bracket
  • Forest Green Lavant covering
  • Notable 1998 upgrade over the earlier AG100 because digital effects become a central feature
Featured models: AG100D AG100-12

SX Series with Digital Effects

The SX Series with Digital Effects marks a clear 1998 update to Carvin’s solid-state guitar amp line. The 1997 SX100 and SX200 already had Carvin’s Tube Simulator design, dual-channel clean/overdrive operation, active EQ, effects loop, headphone output, and preamp output. The 1998 SX100D and SX200D retain that core architecture but add a built-in digital effects processor as the headline improvement. The catalog emphasizes 16 premium effects, including reverbs, choruses, flanges, and delays, giving players a more complete stage-ready amp without needing a separate rack processor. The SX100D is the 1x12 version, while the SX200D expands the format with two 12-inch speakers for a larger combo sound.

  • 1998 digital-effects update to the SX guitar amp family
  • 100-watt solid-state platform
  • SX100D: 1x12 combo format
  • SX200D: 2x12 combo format
  • Built around Carvin’s SX Tube Simulator concept
  • Dual channels: clean and overdrive
  • Active EQ for flexible tone shaping
  • Built-in 16-effect digital processor
  • Effects include reverb, chorus, flange, and delay
  • Effects loop for external pedals or rack gear
  • Headphone and preamp outputs
  • Lightweight plywood cabinet construction
  • Designed as a self-contained gigging amp platform
  • New for 1998 compared with the 1997 SX Series because digital effects move into the amp itself
Featured models: SX100D SX200D

Catalog Story

Inside the Carvin Catalog

The 1998 Carvin catalog continues the structure of the 1997 catalog but adds a stronger emphasis on complete working systems, digital effects, and higher-output stage rigs. The familiar 1997 loudspeaker and mixer families remain recognizable, including DCM and HT power amps, CX mixers, DX consoles, 822/832/942 speakers, 1584/1588 three-way speakers, TR1503/TR1801 trapezoid systems, SW1802 subwoofer, monitor packages, Custom Shop guitars, Custom Shop basses, Pro Bass combos, and Red Line bass amplification. The new year does not abandon the 1997 product map; it expands it with more digitally enhanced amp offerings and a more polished “system package” presentation.

The most visible new amplifier development is the AG100D, which updates the earlier AG100 acoustic/bass/PA amp concept with onboard digital multi-effects. The catalog presents it as a three-channel utility amp for acoustic/electric guitar, bass, microphone, and small PA use, with 100 watts, a 12-inch speaker and horn, phantom mic power, a five-band graphic EQ, effects loop, line out, headphone jack, and tripod stand capability. This is a clear step beyond the earlier AG100 models from 1997 because the 1998 version adds digital effects as a major selling point.

The guitar amp section also refreshes the SX Series with the SX100D and SX200D, adding digital effects to Carvin’s solid-state Tube Simulator platform. Compared with the 1997 SX100/SX200 amps, the 1998 SX models retain the dual-channel clean/overdrive structure, active EQ, effects loop, headphone/preamp outputs, and lightweight plywood cabinet construction, but the digital effects processor becomes the catalog headline. This makes the 1998 SX line more self-contained for players who want amp tone and effects without a separate rack or pedal setup.

On the sound reinforcement side, the catalog remains very strong. The DCM1500/DCM2000 and HT Series power amps anchor the system pages, while the DX1642/DX2442 consoles, CX420/CX630/CX872/CX1272 mixers, 822/832/942 speakers, 1584/1588 three-way cabinets, TR1502/TR1503/TR1801 trapezoids, and SW1802 subwoofer create a full ladder from small portable PA packages to large tri-amped systems. Bass amplification also gains attention through the new R600 Series II Red Line direction, while the PB100/PB200 combo amps remain in the line for portable bass applications. Overall, the 1998 catalog is similar to 1997 in core product families, but its newest identity is built around digital effects integration, expanded complete systems, and updated bass amplifier architecture.
