Steve Vai Legacy Series

The Steve Vai Legacy Series is the defining artist product of the 1999 catalog. The cover announces the Vai Legacy, and the opening spotlight explains Vai’s Carvin history, including early MX sound-system use, X100B stacks, “Blue Powder,” “The Attitude Song,” and the movie “Crossroads.” The catalog describes the Legacy as a long-discussed signature amplifier project developed through extensive listening tests of tube circuits, electronic circuits, prototype enclosures, vintage speakers, and styling details. Vai selected Celestion G12M Greenbacks for the speaker system, and the finished amp uses his visual direction, brown covering, chicken-head controls, and personal anagram logo.

Concert Series Mixers

The Concert Series mixers are a major 1999 development because they move Carvin’s mixer line beyond powered portable systems into a broader live-console family. The line begins with the C800 8-channel mixer, expands into the C1600 and C2400 stereo mixers, and then moves into the C2440 and C3240 4-buss consoles. Across the series, Carvin emphasizes high headroom, low noise, 24-bit Motorola DSP, Crystal 20-bit converters, 100 kHz switching power supplies, premium Neutrik / Re-an connectors, grouped phantom power, direct outs, inserts, monitor sends, stereo returns, and live sound packaging with DCM amplifiers and larger loudspeakers.

CX1272 Stereo Mixer

The CX1272 updates the earlier CX powered mixer platform into a stronger 700-watt stereo package. It is part of the high-powered X72 Series, alongside the CX872 and rackmount CX1272R. The catalog positions the CX1272 as a portable high-power mixer with 12 channels, 350 watts per side, dual 9-band EQs, stereo digital effects, phantom power, XLR and 1/4-inch inputs on every channel, and the ability to power main speakers and monitors through the internal amp routing. It appears in packages with 832, 1584, and 1562 loudspeakers.

  • 12-channel powered stereo mixer
  • 700 watts total stereo output
  • 350/350 watts at 2 ohms
  • 250/250 watts at 4 ohms
  • 175/175 watts at 8 ohms

  • Packaged with 832, 1584, and 1562 loudspeakers
Featured models: CX1272 CX872 CX1272R

TR1802 DJ Loudspeaker

The TR1802 is a 1999 TR Series loudspeaker aimed directly at DJ and dance-club applications. Unlike the TR1801 subwoofer, the TR1802 is a full-range two-way loudspeaker built around an 18-inch woofer and 2-inch titanium horn driver. Carvin frames it as a cabinet for “Dance Club” sound, combining chest-pumping sub-bass with bright, cutting highs. It shares the trapezoid enclosure concept, 15-degree side angles, Speakon / 1/4-inch hookups, and selectable bi-amp operation with the broader TR Series.

  • DJ-oriented TR Series full-range loudspeaker
  • 18-inch woofer with 4-inch voice coil
  • 2-inch titanium horn driver
  • 800 watts continuous program power
  • Frequency response: 37 Hz to 19 kHz ±3 dB
  • Usable low frequency: 30 Hz
  • 103 dB sensitivity
  • 8-ohm nominal impedance
  • C1802 constant-voltage crossover
  • Switchable bi-amp operation
  • Trapezoid cabinet with 15-degree side angle
  • Speakon and 1/4-inch inputs/outputs
  • Designed for dance-club low end plus bright horn projection
Featured models: TR1802 CVS1518

1562 Dual 15-Inch Loudspeaker

The 1562 is one of the most important new loudspeaker additions in 1999 because it fills the space between smaller two-way boxes and the larger 3-way 1584 / 1588 systems. Carvin describes it as its best-value high-powered compact two-way system, designed for larger clubs, churches, school gyms, and outdoor events. Its dual 15-inch format, 600-watt continuous rating, tri-port bass reflex enclosure, 102 dB sensitivity, and 4-ohm impedance make it a practical high-output box for CX1272 and Concert Series packages.

  • Dual 15-inch two-way loudspeaker
  • 600 watts continuous power handling
  • Frequency response: 40 Hz to 19 kHz ±3 dB
  • Usable low frequency: 50 Hz
  • Sensitivity: 102 dB SPL
  • 4-ohm nominal impedance
  • Tri-port bass reflex system
  • Speakon and 1/4-inch connections
  • Designed for high-volume rooms and outdoor events
  • Used in 1500-watt Concert Series packaged systems
Featured models: 1562 CVS1562

PM5 Indoor/Outdoor Program Monitor

The PM5 is a compact indoor/outdoor program monitor that gives the 1999 catalog a new installation and distributed-audio category beyond the larger PA cabinets. It is aimed at studios, commercial buildings, schools, boardrooms, restaurants, home stereo/home theater use, patios, and outdoor facilities. The catalog emphasizes its accurate response out to 19.5 kHz, bass-reflex tuned-port enclosure, 100-watt RMS handling, swivel OMNI tweeter, wall/ceiling mounting options, and water-resistant design that Carvin tested by submerging the drivers for 12 hours while the speakers continued to perform.

  • New compact indoor/outdoor program monitor category
  • Available in black or white
  • 100 watts RMS continuous program handling
  • Bass-reflex design with tuned port
  • Accurate response to 19.5 kHz

  • Offered in two-, four-, and eight-speaker packages with HT150 or DCM600 amplification
Featured models: PM5-B PM5-W PM5-CS PM5-UB PM5-UW
Catalog Story

Inside the Carvin Catalog

The 1999 catalog builds from the 1998 catalog’s high-power system direction but broadens the product line in several important ways. The earlier DCM / HT power amp platform, Redline bass systems, 1584 / 1588 loudspeakers, and CX-style sound systems remain important, but 1999 adds more specialized speaker formats, revised mixer families, and one of Carvin’s most visible artist amplifier launches.

The most prominent new product is the Steve Vai Legacy Series, introduced on the cover and given a full feature story in the opening pages. The catalog explains Vai’s long Carvin history, from early MX and X100B use through the development of the Legacy amp, and emphasizes the listening tests, tube choices, cabinet testing, Celestion G12M Greenback speakers, and visual styling that shaped the finished product. This makes the Legacy Series the year’s central guitar amplifier story.

On the sound-system side, 1999 adds important refinements. The PM5 creates a compact indoor/outdoor program monitor category. The 1562 adds a dual-15 two-way loudspeaker for high-output compact systems. The TR1802 updates the trapezoid line with an 18-inch DJ loudspeaker designed around dance-floor low end and bright horn output. The CX872 / CX1272 powered mixers replace the earlier CX842 / CX1252 style naming with a stronger 700-watt stereo platform. The new Concert Series mixers - C800, C1600, C2400, C2440, and C3240 - give the catalog a more modern live-mixing section, with 24-bit DSP, switching power supplies, grouped phantom power, 4-buss options, and packaged large concert systems.

Compared with 1998, 1999 is not a reset. It is a major expansion and refinement year. The catalog keeps Carvin’s system-building identity intact, but adds more cabinet choices, more mixer tiers, more wireless/monitoring options, and a signature amplifier line that becomes one of the strongest artist-linked products in the book.
