LS1503 3-Way Loudspeaker

The LS1503 is Carvin's three-way LS-series main loudspeaker, designed to divide the audio spectrum among dedicated low-, mid- and high-frequency sections. A heavy-duty 15-inch woofer handles the low frequencies, a 6-inch midrange driver improves intelligibility and projection through the vocal and instrument range, and a 1-inch titanium HF driver handles the high-frequency band. Carvin rates the enclosure at 400 watts continuous, 800 watts program and 1600 watts peak into 8 ohms.

TRX215N Neo Loudspeaker

The TRx215N is the largest dual-15-inch full-range enclosure shown in the 2012 TRx range. It uses two lightweight neodymium 15-inch woofers with 3-inch voice coils plus a 2-inch-exit neodymium high-frequency driver with a 3-inch voice coil. Its quasi-three-way crossover lets the lower 15-inch driver reinforce the low-frequency range while the upper woofer continues farther into the midrange, and the 60° horizontal × 40° vertical horn controls high-frequency coverage. The cabinet can operate through its internal crossover or provide driver access for tri-amplification through NL8 connectivity.

  • Dual 15-inch quasi-3-way loudspeaker
  • Bass-reflex enclosure
  • Dual 15-inch neodymium LF drivers
  • 3-inch LF voice coils
  • 2-inch-exit neodymium HF compression driver

Catalog Story

Inside the Carvin Catalog

The 2012 Carvin catalog carries forward much of the amplifier and professional-sound lineup established in 2011 while introducing several important additions around compact bass amplification, digital system processing and new instrument designs. The cover itself identifies four of the year's principal additions: the DC800 eight-string guitar, CS624 24-fret California Single, MB210 Micro Bass amplifier, and EQ230/EQ430 digital equalizers.

One of the catalog's most visible themes is the next chapter of the Steve Vai Legacy amplifier story. The opening editorial recounts the original 1999 Legacy, the three-channel Legacy II introduced in 2009, and announces that Legacy III would be unveiled at Winter NAMM 2012 in Anaheim on January 20. The catalog therefore documents the transition toward the third Legacy generation, although this particular printing functions as a teaser rather than a full Legacy III product-specification page. The established X100B Series IV, Vintage 16, VT16, Nomad, Bel Air, VT50 and SX families remain in the catalog, giving 2012 a broad range of tube and solid-state guitar amplification alongside the upcoming Legacy announcement.

Bass amplification changes more concretely. The BX250, BX500, BX1500 and B2000 remain the core stand-alone bass heads, but the Micro Bass family expands with the new MB210, a dual-10-inch combo using the same 250-watt amplifier platform as the other MB models. Carvin specifically presents the MB210 as a new addition, emphasizing the tighter response associated with dual 10-inch drivers while retaining the portable format of the Micro Bass series. The catalog also shows revised BR515 and BR510 500-watt-system combinations built around the BX500 head, together with BR and BRX cabinets for progressively larger rigs.

The professional-audio section remains substantial. The lightweight DCM1000L, DCM2000L, DCM1540L, DCM3000L and DCM3800L continue as Carvin's primary touring and installation power amplifiers, supplemented by the DCM200L, DCM2004L and HD1500. Carvin describes the DCM family as being used for touring, fixed installations and concert applications, with models spanning 200 to 3800 watts and both Class D and Class A/B designs.

The most notable processing development from 2011 to 2012 is the expansion of the X-Drive platform. The XD360 loudspeaker-management processor carries over, while the new EQ230 and EQ430 provide dedicated two- and four-channel 30-band digital equalization. They can operate independently or alongside the XD360 and add computer control, stored configurations, high- and low-pass filtering, output limiting and delay. The 2012 news page explicitly identifies the EQ230 and EQ430 as an expansion of the X-Drive processor family.

Carvin's loudspeaker offerings are largely evolutionary compared with 2011. The LS Series continues from compact stage monitors through the LS1502, LS1503, LS2153 and LS1523 mains and LS1501/LS1801 subwoofers. The LS1503 remains a three-way design built around a 15-inch low-frequency driver, dedicated 6-inch midrange and 1-inch titanium high-frequency driver, providing a distinct midrange section rather than asking the woofer and horn to cover the entire spectrum.

The higher-output TRx family also continues with the TRx12N, TRx115N, TRx215N, TRx153N, TRx210, TRx118N and TRx218N. The TRx215N remains one of the largest full-range enclosures in the line, combining dual neodymium 15-inch drivers with a 2-inch-exit neodymium compression driver, a 60° × 40° coverage pattern and 1200-watt continuous power handling. The overall loudspeaker lineup is therefore more a continuation and refinement of the 2011 structure than a wholesale replacement.

For instruments, however, 2012 contains several clearly identified additions. The new HH1 and HH2 Allan Holdsworth headless guitars introduce Carvin-designed fixed and tremolo bridge systems while retaining Holdsworth's H22 signature pickups and preferred neck profile. The CS624 expands the California Single into a 24-fret format. The DC800, first unveiled in late 2011, brings an eight-string extended-range instrument into the 2012 catalog. These appear alongside the FG1 Frank Gambale model, SH carved-top instruments, DC700, Brian Bromberg B² basses and the established SB, Icon, LB/XB and Bunny Brunel bass families.

Compared with 2011, the overall amplifier, power-amplifier and loudspeaker architecture is recognizably similar. The clearest 2012 additions are the Legacy III announcement, HH1/HH2 headless Holdsworth guitars, CS624, DC800, MB210, EQ230 and EQ430. The XD360, BX250, V3M-era concepts, DCM lightweight amplifiers, LS loudspeakers and TRx Neo systems represent continuity from the preceding catalog rather than newly introduced 2012 products.
