65th Anniversary Celebration

The 2011 catalog commemorates Carvin's 65th anniversary, tracing the company back to Lowell Kiesel's 1946 mail-order pickup business. The anniversary material emphasizes continuity in the company's direct-sales model—from mail order through the launch of Carvin's first website in 1996—and notes how the company expanded over the decades into guitars, basses, amplifiers, and professional sound products. The anniversary logo is featured prominently on the catalog cover, and readers are directed to Carvin.com/65 and the company's social-media channels for anniversary-related news.

V3M

The V3M is one of the standout amplifier introductions of the 2011 catalog. It condenses the functionality of Carvin's larger V3 platform into a compact all-tube head while retaining three independent channels, reverb, boost, and broad tonal flexibility. Carvin rates the head for 50, 22, or 7 watts, allowing it to move from stage output to lower-volume recording and rehearsal use without abandoning the same tube architecture. Matching 112V and 212V cabinets create compact micro-stack packages, while the V3MC packages the same concept into a combo. The catalog describes the V3M as suitable for jazz, country, blues, rock, and metal and highlights professional use by Bernie Versailles as well as Brendon Small's acquisition of the amplifier.

VT16 Vintage Tube Amplifier

The VT16 brings Carvin's Vintage Series circuit into a compact head format. It shares the essential character of the Vintage16 combo—Pentode/Triode power switching, SOAK control, traditional bass/mid/treble tone controls, and classic reverb—but allows the guitarist to choose an external speaker cabinet. Output is switchable between approximately 16 watts and 5 watts, making the head useful for recording, rehearsal, small stages, and players wanting power-tube overdrive at more manageable sound levels. Carvin packages the head as both the VT16-112 and VT16-212 mini stacks using the 112E or 212E extension cabinets.

  • Compact Vintage Series tube head
  • 16 watt / 5 watt selectable output
  • Pentode/Triode switching
  • Class A/B operation
  • SOAK control for clean-to-overdriven tube tones
  • Bass, mid, and treble controls

BX250 Micro Bass Head

The BX250 takes the amplifier and control concept used in Carvin's MB Micro Bass combos and makes it available as a separate ultralight head. It delivers 250 watts into either one 4-ohm cabinet or two 8-ohm cabinets while weighing only 3.2 pounds. This makes the BX250 particularly useful for bass players who want the portability and tone-shaping of the Micro Bass platform but prefer to select their own speaker cabinet. The rear panel provides direct output, headphones/tuner connectivity, and extension-speaker connection, while the front panel retains the familiar drive, contour, EQ, compressor, and level controls of the MB platform.

  • New stand-alone Micro Bass head
  • 250 watts
  • Drives one 4-ohm or two 8-ohm cabinets
  • Only 3.2 lb
  • Approximately 10"W × 7.15"D × 3.7"H
  • Same core amplifier/control concept as MB combos
  • Compact Class D architecture
  • Drive control
  • Contour control
  • EQ section
  • Compressor
  • Balanced direct output

Custom Sound Systems

Instead of directing every customer to a predefined package, Custom System Design allows a Carvin Pro Audio Specialist to configure a system around the customer's actual requirements. The process begins with mixer selection, moves to the appropriate loudspeakers, then matches the required power amplifiers to those speakers, with subwoofers, monitors, and rack gear added as needed. Carvin also advertises 5% off the custom system purchase, free cables determined by system size and power requirements, and additional free gear based on the overall system. Pre-packaged TRx systems remain available for users who prefer a ready-made configuration.

  • Customer works directly with a Carvin Pro Audio Specialist
  • Step 1: Select mixer
  • Step 2: Select loudspeakers
  • Step 3: Select and properly match power amplifier(s)
  • Step 4: Add optional subwoofers, monitors, and rack gear

XD360 X-Drive Loudspeaker Management

The XD360 X-Drive is Carvin's 3-input / 6-output digital loudspeaker-management processor and represents a more streamlined approach to the multi-amplifier processing shown in the 2010 catalog. It can operate as a stereo 3-way crossover, triple 2-way crossover, stereo 2-way system with stereo or summed mono subwoofers, or a single mono 6-way processor. The unit stores 16 complete systems and includes factory presets for Carvin LS, TRx, and TCS loudspeakers, reducing setup time for Carvin-based rigs. Each input offers parametric EQ and delay; every output adds high- and low-pass filtering, parametric EQ, limiting, phase control, and delay. USB computer control allows systems to be programmed before a show or adjusted in real time.

Catalog Story

Inside the Carvin Catalog

The 2011 Carvin catalog retains much of the lightweight professional-audio architecture introduced in 2010, but develops it with several new compact amplifier products, revised system processing, expanded loudspeaker offerings, and a strong company-history theme built around Carvin's 65th anniversary. The opening material traces the company back to Lowell Kiesel's mail-order pickup business in 1946 and notes Carvin's expansion into guitars, basses, amplifiers, and professional sound equipment over the ensuing 65 years.

The professional sound section continues the 2010 emphasis on lightweight amplification and complete systems. DCM-L amplifiers remain central, but the family grows with special-purpose models such as the DCM200L studio/reference amplifier and four-channel DCM2004L, while the HD1500 provides a lightweight Class D alternative for users requiring continuous 2-ohm operation. The established DCM1000L, DCM2000L, DCM1540L, DCM3000L, and DCM3800L remain the principal high-output rack amplifiers.

Carvin's loudspeaker line also continues the LS and TRx Neo direction established in 2010. LS full-range systems and monitors remain available for club, portable, and installed applications, while the TRxN family continues as the higher-output touring line. One notable addition is the TRx210N, a compact dual-10-inch Neo system that extends the TRx range below the larger TRx115N, TRx215N, and TRx153N enclosures. The PM family is expanded as well, with passive and active PM10, PM12, and PM15 configurations providing more compact main and monitor options.

One of the larger changes is system processing. The 2010 catalog featured the XD88 digital loudspeaker processor; the 2011 catalog introduces the XD360 X-Drive, a 3-input/6-output loudspeaker-management processor designed for systems ranging from stereo 2-way and 3-way operation through triple 2-way and mono 6-way configurations. It stores 16 complete systems and includes factory presets for Carvin LS, TRx, and TCS loudspeakers. Each output includes crossover filtering, parametric EQ, limiting, phase control, and delay, providing a more accessible way to configure Carvin's multi-amplifier systems.

The catalog also formalizes Carvin's Custom System Design approach. Rather than limiting buyers to fixed package combinations, page 49 instructs customers to work with a Pro Audio Specialist to choose a mixer, loudspeakers, correctly matched power amplifiers, and optional subwoofers, monitors, and rack equipment. Carvin advertises system-level incentives including cables and additional gear based on the size and requirements of the system.

Guitar amplification sees one of the most visible 2011 introductions with the V3M, a compact three-channel, all-tube amplifier derived from the larger V3 concept. The V3M provides selectable 50-, 22-, and 7-watt operation, switchable reverb and boost, and is offered as a head, combo, and compact 1x12 or 2x12 stack. The catalog's artist-news section notes that Brendon Small had already acquired a V3M after using the Legacy II and VT50 on his recording work. The VT16 similarly extends the Vintage Series into a compact head format, pairing 16/5-watt Pentode/Triode operation with the familiar SOAK control and offering matching 1x12 and 2x12 mini-stack configurations.

Bass amplification follows the same compact-system direction. The MB Micro Bass combos remain, while the new BX250 takes essentially the same 250-watt amplifier platform and makes it available as an independent 3.2-pound head. This allows players to combine the Micro Bass preamp and tone controls with their own cabinets instead of purchasing a complete combo. The BX500, BX1500, and B2000 continue above it for progressively larger stage systems.

Instrument development is also significant. The catalog introduces the active DC700 seven-string, with redesigned body sculpting, a new headstock, and newly developed A70N/A70B humbuckers. The Bolt-C adds an original Floyd Rose option, while cedar-top versions of the SH550 and SH575 broaden the carved semi-hollow line. Frank Gambale receives the FG1 signature carved-top guitar, and the new Brian Bromberg B² Series introduces the B24 and B25 basses with radius-matched RAD-J pickups and Bromberg-specific 18V electronics.

Overall, 2011 is evolutionary relative to 2010 rather than a wholesale redesign, but several additions are historically useful: the 65th Anniversary celebration, V3M, VT16 head and mini stacks, BX250 micro bass head, XD360 loudspeaker management, expanded DCM lightweight products, custom sound-system design service, DC700 seven-string, FG1 Frank Gambale guitar, and Brian Bromberg B² basses.
