Model #79 Amplifier

The Model #79 Amplifier represents Carvin’s entry-level tube amplifier design, pairing a compact cabinet with a 4-watt output and an 8-inch speaker. Marketed as a serious alternative to lower-quality student amps, it emphasized clean tone, solid construction, and professional styling, making it a popular companion to Carvin’s early steel and student guitars.

Models #11 and #119

Moving into higher performance territory, the Model #11 and Model #119 amplifiers expanded output power, speaker size, and tube configurations to meet the needs of advancing and professional players. These models featured multiple inputs, heavier-duty transformers, and increased wattage, offering greater volume, improved headroom, and reliable performance for stage and ensemble use.

Model No. 6661

The most ambitious design in the catalog is the Model No. 6661 Multi-Speaker Amplifier, a 30-watt tube amplifier that replaced a single large speaker with six smaller speakers for enhanced projection and tonal clarity. Promoted as outperforming any traditional single-speaker amplifier, the 6661 reflects Carvin’s early experimentation with amplifier architecture and its commitment to pushing electric amplification beyond established norms.

Guitar Artist

Noel Boggs — Steel guitar virtuoso Noel Boggs represents the advanced multi-neck steel guitar tradition highlighted in the catalog. Boggs was known for complex tunings and extended harmonic vocabulary, aligning closely with Carvin’s double- and triple-neck electric console steel guitars such as the Model #762, Model #661, and Model #591.

Guitar Artist

Leon McAuliffe — Western Swing steel guitar pioneer Leon McAuliffe is associated with Carvin’s electric Hawaiian guitars in the catalog. Catalog Story

Inside the Carvin Catalog

The 1954 Carvin catalog presents Carvin as a direct-to-consumer maker of electric instruments, amplifiers, and accessories, emphasizing wholesale pricing, money-back guarantees, and professional-grade construction. The core of the book is Carvin’s electric steel and console guitar line, ranging from student models to deluxe six-, eight-, double-, and triple-neck instruments, supported by matching amplifiers from compact 4-watt combos to the multi-speaker Model 6661. Spanish electric offerings include arched, cutaway, flat top, and solid body designs, alongside an electric mandolin, banjos, and a substantial accordion section. The catalog also promotes pickup units, parts, and build-your-own guitar kits, showing Carvin’s appeal to hobbyists and working musicians alike. Later pages expand into third-party products from Martin, Fender, DeArmond, and Amperite, making the catalog a broad snapshot of mid-century electric and fretted instrument retail. Page references span the cover and brand introduction on p1-p2, featured Carvin product groups on p3-p15, outside-brand offerings on p16-p18, and accessory/mailer material on p19-p20.
