How a Column Array Can Streamline Your Stage

How a Column Array Can Streamline Your Stage

Not so long ago, it took a pretty big system to reach a large audience. With big speakers, bigger subs, and an array of power amps, set up for even moderately sized shows was lengthy and stages cluttered. This made the efficient setup of a stage difficult, and playing to growing audiences meant finding an established venue, limiting reach for some bands.

This is no longer the case, thanks to the technology of active column arrays like Carvin Audio’s TRC Column Array Systems, which are available in configurations up to 8000W. These systems are active (meaning they don’t need an external power amp), light, and small, meaning they can be moved and set up quickly and don’t take up much space on stage.

The TRC400A 4000W Powered Column Array System, for example, can break down and fit in the back of a Tesla Model Y, even with an accompanying 24-channel mix console with room to spare. Each of the four speaker array tops weighs only 23 pounds and stack on top of each other and on top of the two included subwoofers, making for a streamlined stereo system capable of delivering high levels of sound pressure and projecting out to 400 feet. Meanwhile, Multiple Source Dispersion (MSD™) technology reduces hot spots and feedback, meaning audiences get a more even experience no matter where they sit – and you can feel more confident going out into the crowd.

18-inch subs provide the deep bass you need to immerse the audience in the middle of your performance, and all without much impact on your stage aesthetic – keeping your look streamlined and professional.

Using a Column Array in a Permanent Installation

TRC Column Array Systems consist of two main components: the TRX3118A 2000W active subwoofer and TRX3900F 3.5-inch column array loudspeakers. These modular components can be configured in a variety of ways to expand setups.

The TRX3900F speaker systems are flyable and lightweight, have optional adaptable flyware to aim the speakers as needed so they can be installed in almost any permanent situation, and these passive speaker systems can derive power from the active TRX3118A subwoofer or your own existing power amps. This modularity and flexibility mean you can use TRX column array systems and components to streamline any system from large to small, on the go and in an established venue.

Battery Powered Systems for Real Flexibility

Column array technology isn’t limited to larger traveling stages or venues. Now, solo musicians can be ready for anything with battery-powered column array-based PA systems like Carvin Audio’s S500 400W Battery-Powered Column Array System.

This active system delivers 400 watts of Class-D bi-amp power for pristine clarity and full-bodied sound no matter where the gig takes you. The S500 can run for 5 hours at full volume and takes only 3 hours to charge when fully depleted. With a 5-channel mixer and Bluetooth capability, the S500 can be paired with another S500 wirelessly for a full stereo spread – perfect for outdoor DJing or keyboard-based performances.

Paired with a wireless guitar system like Carvin’s WG5 wireless guitar and bass system, the S500 can provide a wireless sound reinforcement solution, great for outdoor performances where space, aesthetics, and flexibility are crucial.

Powerful, Modern Tools

In the world of audio, there are a lot of different designs for different situations and newer technology like column arrays open a variety of options for musicians and audio professionals alike.

So, consider a column array system if you’re looking to streamline your stage and reach larger audiences easily.

One of the most misunderstood concepts in all of audio is the difference between gain and volume. It’s easy to misunderstand this distinction – after all in one sense they are the same basic thing. But there are key differences that are important to understand, especially when it comes to getting the tone you want. This is true whether we’re talking about guitar amps, studio recording, or mixing. Let’s clear it up here.

Modern recordings can be complex and hard to duplicate on stage. Whether it’s because you’ve layered four guitars and only have one guitar player, you’re using loops and sampling creatively, or the sounds you make in the studio are impossible to create with live instruments, you may find yourself struggling to figure out how to recreate a beloved recording on stage.
