1979 ASG600 Stereo Power Amp

The ASG600 is one of the clearest “new for 1979” highlights. It adds more top-end headroom to Carvin’s stereo power-amp line and is designed for stereo or bi-amped reinforcement use, with balanced BI-FET inputs, selectable bi-amp filters, and substantial heat-sink capacity for sustained use. It is a key reason the larger 1979 systems feel more fully developed than their 1978 counterparts.

  • new higher-capacity stereo power amp
  • selectable bi-amp crossover operation
  • balanced BI-FET XLR inputs
  • XLR speaker outputs
  • rack-mount capable utility format
Featured models: ASG600

GAUSS 1330 Horn Loaded Loudspeaker

Since the JBL1330 concept was already prominent before, the GAUSS 1330 is the better 1979 loudspeaker highlight under your non-repeat rule. It is presented as the higher-power version of the 1330 horn-loaded commercial system, using the Gauss 5840 and offering more power handling and efficiency for users who need stronger output than the JBL version.

  • front horn and port horn-loaded cabinet
  • Gauss 5840 15-inch speaker
  • higher power handling than JBL1330
  • stronger efficiency and output emphasis
  • professional XLR speaker connection and heavy-duty cabinet construction
Featured models: GAUSS 1330 JBL1330 C130

MP1000 Professional Power Mixer

The MP1000 is a high-capacity powered mixer designed to serve as a central control point for complete PA systems. It combines multi-channel input capability with integrated power amplification, allowing users to operate a full sound system without requiring separate external power amps. Positioned above smaller mixers, it supports larger band setups and expandable reinforcement systems.

  • Multi-channel input configuration for full band and vocal mixing
  • Integrated power amplifier section for direct speaker operation
  • Built-in graphic equalization for tonal shaping
  • Multiple output paths for system expansion and monitoring
  • Designed for use in medium to large venue PA systems
  • Can be paired with power slaves for additional output capability
  • Rack-compatible and system-oriented design
Featured models: MP1000

STX812-M250 Bi-Channel Guitar Stack

The STX812-M250 is a strong stack highlight because it shows Carvin adapting its dual-channel architecture into a large-format solid-state guitar rig. It avoids repeating the most obvious tube head emphasis and instead demonstrates how the catalog broadens into flexible, high-power stack systems with one or two cabinets

  • dual-channel solid-state head
  • double-stack format
  • 250 watt RMS chassis
  • independent channel architecture with graphic EQ per channel
  • strong stage-volume platform with MagnaLab 4x12 cabinets
Featured models: STX812-M250 STX250 M412 CV-H415 FS-34

VTX Series Bi-Channel Amplifiers

The VTX series represents Carvin’s bi-channel amplifier platform, combining clean and sustain channels into a single system designed for flexibility and high-output stage performance. Available in both combo and stack configurations, the VTX line bridges portability and large-scale amplification while maintaining consistent tonal control across channels.

  • Bi-channel design (normal + sustain channels) for tonal versatility
  • Solid-state amplification with high reliability and consistent output
  • 7-band graphic equalizer per channel for detailed tone shaping
  • Available in combo and stack formats (1x12, 2x12, 4x12 configurations)
  • Designed for medium to large stage environments
  • Compatible with MagnaLab, JBL, and Gauss speaker options
  • Modular system approach with multiple cabinet pairings
Featured models: VTX-112 JBL VTX-112 Gauss VTX-212 MagnaLab VTX-212 JBL VTX-212 Gauss VTX412-M VTX412-C VTX812-M VTX812-C

B-115 Bass Combo Amplifier

The B-115 is a practical 1979 bass highlight because it translates Carvin’s power-unit and equalizer thinking into a portable bass combo designed for studio and club use. It is more compact than the big Bass Master stacks but still carries the catalog’s emphasis on control and strong low-end performance.

  • portable bass amp format
  • 15-inch speaker layout
  • 7-band EQ
  • normal and sustain channels
  • JBL-loaded option for greater output
Featured models: B-115 B-115 JBL CV-95 FS-11
Catalog Story

Inside the Carvin Catalog

The 1979 Carvin catalog is closely related to the 1978 book in overall direction, and it is fair to say that this year is similar to the previous year in its basic structure. Carvin still places complete reinforcement systems, mixers, monitor power, horn-loaded speaker packages, and modular stage rigs at the center of the catalog. The opening pages again give strong visibility to the Q1608 / MX16 professional recording and road-board concept, emphasizing fully balanced inputs, parametric channel EQ, joystick quad panning, multiple balanced outputs, and 16-to-32 channel expandability. That opening sets the tone for a catalog that continues to treat Carvin as a full systems supplier rather than only an amp or guitar company.

Compared with 1978, the 1979 catalog keeps most of the established mixer and sound-system framework intact, but it shows several notable refinements and additions. The mixer line remains broad with the S1800, S1200, MP1000, SP600, MP600, and MP410, but the catalog spends more time explaining circuitry, balanced differential inputs, special mixer features, and parametric or graphic equalization in a more educational way. That gives the 1979 edition a slightly more technical feel, especially in the mixer section.

One of the clearest new developments is the appearance of the ASG600 stereo power amp, called out as NEW. It expands the ASG line above the ASG250A and brings higher per-channel power with bi-amp crossovers, balanced BI-FET inputs, XLR speaker outputs, and rack-mount utility. This strengthens the upper end of Carvin’s reinforcement architecture and gives the larger packaged systems more headroom than the prior year’s lineup.

The loudspeaker section also shows a meaningful broadening of choices. The 1330 horn-loaded commercial system remains important, but in 1979 it is offered in JBL1330 and GAUSS 1330 forms, and the radial horn section presents both JBL520 and EM520 options with the XC805 crossover. That clearer JBL / Emilar / Gauss branching gives 1979 more component-level flexibility than 1978 and makes the catalog feel more customizable at the professional end. The PH220 Compression-Piezo Horn System, also marked NEW, adds another option for high-frequency reinforcement and speaker-building applications.

Monitor and complete sound-system offerings remain a major part of the catalog identity. The Monitor 1–4 and JBL Monitor 1–4 packages continue the previous year’s systems-based presentation, while System 1 through System 10, including Concert and Super Concert variants, make the progression from compact club rigs to large-format JBL horn-loaded systems very easy to follow. Compared to 1978, the 1979 system pages feel more standardized and better tiered.

The amplifier section is one area where 1979 becomes more distinct. Alongside familiar solid-state and power-amp logic, the catalog adds a stronger instrument-amp identity through products like the VT-112, VT-212, B-115, VTX and STX bi-channel combo and stack families, and the Bass Master / Super Bass Master systems. These models make the 1979 catalog feel more evenly balanced between reinforcement products and stage backline than the 1978 catalog. The guitar section likewise remains important, with models such as the CM140, DC160, DC150, CM130, LB50, and LB60, but the broader story is still driven by control consoles, power amps, horn systems, and complete packaged rigs.

Overall, 1979 does not depart sharply from 1978. Instead, it builds on the same systems-first structure while adding a few notable new products, especially the ASG600, PH220, the Gauss 1330 option, and a more fully articulated lineup of bi-channel and stack-style instrument amplifiers.
