Stage 8 Sound System

The Stage 8 is the premier PA category product because it represents the top of the 1974 Carvin live-sound ladder: stereo console mixing, dual power slaves, four PS1000 bottoms, and four EV868 horns. This is the catalog’s clearest signal that Carvin now intends to serve not just bands needing a PA, but full professional groups needing true large-scale reinforcement and stereo capability.

  • SP8000 stereo console plus two S500 power slaves
  • 500 watts RMS / 1200 watts peak total output
  • Four PS1000 speaker systems plus four EV868 projection horns
  • Stereo large-room / outdoor-stage orientation
  • Biggest and most complete PA package in the catalog
Featured models: PS1000 EV868 S500 power slaves

PS1000 + EV868 Combination Loudspeaker

The PS1000 paired with EV868 horns is the key loudspeaker story of the 1974 catalog. It extends Carvin’s system philosophy beyond standard combo speaker stacks into professional reinforcement territory, with dedicated low-frequency and projection-horn elements. Carvin even positions it against the Altec A-7 class of system, which shows how seriously the company wanted this combination to be taken.

  • PS1000 uses dual 15-inch bass and dual 12-inch full-range drivers
  • EV868 compound diffraction horn adds high-output intelligibility
  • Approx. 25% more acoustic volume than PS900 system when combined
  • Tuned ported bass-reflex cabinet
  • Designed for PA, but also suitable for bass/rhythm applications
Featured models: EV868 PS1000

ML212 Guitar Combo Amplifier

The ML212 is the premier compact-amp highlight because it distills the catalog’s power-and-portability message into a manageable format. It gives players a professional-grade ST2400-based amp in a cabinet that can travel easily, making it one of Carvin’s most practical working-musician products.

  • 125 watts RMS from ST2400 chassis
  • Dual 12-inch CTS speakers in compact open-back format
  • Master volume and reverb-equipped lead feature set
  • Strong portability without giving up stage-worthy output
  • Optional Altec variant available
Featured models: ML212
Catalog Story

Inside the Carvin Catalog

The 1974 Carvin catalog pushes even harder toward complete stage systems built around higher-output heads, matched enclosures, and scalable sound reinforcement packages. Where the 1973 catalog already leaned into full systems and modular expansion, the 1974 edition sharpens that direction with a broader spread of stackable lead rigs, more formalized Stage sound systems, expanded power-mixer offerings, and several revised speaker enclosures that give the catalog a more unified “build the whole rig” feel rather than a loose collection of individual products. The front cover itself signals this shift by presenting stacked lead, bass, PA, and mixer products together as a coordinated performance lineup rather than isolated hero items.

Compared with 1973, the 1974 catalog introduces several notable model and lineup changes. In lead amplification, the 1973 SLM1000 / BL1250 / FR1200 / SM500 family is reorganized and broadened with more clearly defined single- and dual-cabinet “Super” variants such as SLM1000-1, SLM1000-2, SBL1250-1, SBL1250-2, SLP600-1, and SLP600-2, making the step-up path from one enclosure to two much more explicit. The lead section also shows revised cabinet architecture, especially the SR680 replacing the earlier SR660, and the PS900 replacing the earlier PS800, signaling an effort to modernize enclosure tuning and driver combinations while preserving familiar application roles.

The biggest jump from 1973 to 1974 is in PA system formalization. In 1973, Carvin already offered Stage I through Stage III systems and larger P.A. packages, but in 1974 the range expands decisively upward into Stage 4, Stage 5, Stage 6, Stage 7, and Stage 8, with clearer separation between compact PA, horn-loaded large-format PA, mono mixer systems, and full stereo control-console systems. The addition of the SP8000 12-channel stereo audio control console is especially significant; it moves the catalog beyond powered mixers into true console-plus-power-slave modular sound reinforcement, aimed at larger professional groups and more sophisticated live or recording applications.

Speaker development is also more pronounced in 1974. The PS1000 becomes a major bass-reflex foundation for both bass and PA use, and the catalog explicitly pairs it with the EV868 projection horn for higher-output large-format systems. That pairing gives Carvin a stronger answer to professional auditorium and outdoor-stage requirements than the more modest 1973 PS860 / PS900-centered progression. In short, 1974 feels less like an incremental catalog refresh and more like a consolidation year in which Carvin tightens its stage-system logic, expands its top-end PA ambitions, and clarifies upgrade paths from club rigs to full concert reinforcement.

On the instrument side, the catalog remains present but secondary to the amplification and loudspeaker story. Guitar and bass offerings continue from 1973, but 1974 adds or foregrounds models like the SS85 and SS120, while maintaining the established maple-body electric and hollow/thin-line bass and guitar families. These instruments still support the catalog’s message, but the core narrative is dominated by power, speaker efficiency, horn loading, mixer capability, and transportable pro rigs.
